Introduction to SEO Presentation

One of my co-workers sent around an Introduction to SEO Presentation this morning, and I thought it interesting enough to post here.  A few of the things I get asked fairly frequently ,as a technology professional, are what is SEO, how does it apply to my site, and do I have to do anything special to make sure my site is SEO optimized.

This presentation does a pretty good job of answering the what is SEO question, as well as the how does it apply to my site.  In terms of what to do to ensure your site is SEO optimized, there are a few simple things everyone should be doing to ensure their site is as optimized as possible.  In no particular order, here are a few things you can do to help improve your Google ranking.

  • Ensure proper use of html
  • Change up the content on your homepage frequently
  • Don’t hide content or keywords on the page
  • Use proper meta tags including page titles
  • URLs should be user friendly

A few less obvious things you can do to improve your search ranking.

  • Use caching to speed up the load time of your website.
  • Ensure there are no broken links both from or to your site
  • Provide an XML sitemap
  • Connect social networks to your site, and be active in the social space

This is by no means an exhaustive list – just a few of the things I recommend / look into when being asked abou SEO.
